What is the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI)?
The Web Accessibility Initiative develops standards and guidelines used online all over the world. The WAI also creates support materials and resources for teaching and implementing web accessibility.
The WAI was created in 1994 by the World Wide Web Consortium® (W3C) to address barriers to the internet and web tools for people with disabilities. Volunteers from around the world collaborate to review, implement, and promote current guidelines and standards for web accessibility.
WAI Standards are developed through a consensus-based process and includes stakeholders from disability organizations, government entities, accessibility research organizations, and industry practitioners.
